Getting Married in Thailand? Let Emigration Assist Handle Your Documents
If you’re planning on getting married in Thailand, you will need more than just your passport and travel arrangements. Thai authorities require certain South African documents to be obtained, authenticated, legalized, and often translated before you can register your marriage.
Fortunately, Emigration Assist offers a complete end-to-end service. We can obtain your documents, arrange DIRCO attestation, assist with Thai Embassy legalization, and guide you through the process from start to finish.
What Documents Do You Need to Get Married in Thailand?
Before you travel, most South Africans getting married in Thailand will require:
- A Letter of No Impediment to Marry (also known as an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry)
- An Unabridged Birth Certificate
- DIRCO Attestation
- Legalization by the Royal Thai Embassy
- Certified Thai translations
Unfortunately, many couples only discover late in the process that both their Letter of No Impediment and their Unabridged Birth Certificate require legalization. Therefore, it is usually quicker and more cost-effective to prepare all your documents at the same time.
Letter of No Impediment to Marry
The Letter of No Impediment confirms that there is no legal reason preventing you from marrying.
At Emigration Assist, we can obtain your Letter of No Impediment quickly and efficiently. In most cases, we complete the process within approximately one to two weeks.
Our fee for obtaining a Letter of No Impediment is R3,400.
Unabridged Birth Certificates
Many Thai authorities and district offices require an Unabridged Birth Certificate as part of the marriage registration process.
If you do not already have one, we can obtain it on your behalf.

DIRCO Attestation
After Home Affairs issues your documents, you must authenticate them through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
We generally submit documents to DIRCO every Wednesday and collect them the following Wednesday. However, processing times can occasionally extend slightly beyond this. In addition, documents must travel to and from Pretoria by courier.
For this reason, we recommend allowing approximately one to two weeks for the DIRCO attestation stage.

Royal Thai Embassy Legalization
Next, the Royal Thai Embassy must legalize your documents before Thai authorities will accept them.
This stage often takes the longest. First, an appointment is required to submit the documents. Then the embassy processes the application. Finally, another appointment is required to collect the legalized documents.
Although Emigration Assist manages the submission process as efficiently as possible, the embassy’s appointment system largely determines the overall processing time.
Therefore, we strongly recommend starting your marriage documentation well before your intended wedding date.
Certified Thai Translations
Once you legalize your South African documents, a certified translator must translate them into Thai. Thai authorities generally require these translations before they will register your marriage.
A trusted provider in Thailand is:
π Sawadee Certified Translation & Legalization Services
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally accepts translations from reputable agencies that provide a signed and stamped Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
Registering Your Marriage in Thailand
After legalizing and translating your documents, you can register your marriage at a local district office, known as an Amphur or Khet.
Typically, you will need:
- Your legalized documents
- Your passport
- Two witnesses
In addition, some district offices may require witnesses who speak Thai or may impose further local requirements.

Why Start Early?
Getting married in Thailand involves several important steps.
First, you need a Letter of No Impediment. In many cases, you will also need an Unabridged Birth Certificate. Next, DIRCO must authenticate these documents. After that, the Royal Thai Embassy must legalize them. Finally, you may need certified Thai translations before registering your marriage.
Because several organisations are involved, delays can occur. However, starting early gives you enough time to complete each stage without unnecessary stress.
